New Solution for Kidney Stone Treatment Now Available at Center for Urology in Rochester

The SURE procedure is a novel approach to kidney stone removal that uses ureteroscopy (a catheter with a tiny camera that travels through the urinary tract) to break up stones with a laser fiber, then gently removes the stone fragments with irrigation and vacuum aspiration, leaving behind a stone-free kidney.
Landmark data from the ASPIRE clinical trial, unveiled at the American Urological Association’s 2024 annual meeting, demonstrates that the SURE procedure surpasses the current standard of care (standard ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy) in terms of kidney stone clearance. One year post-procedure, patients treated with SURE experienced fewer visits to the emergency department, hospitalizations, and need for retreatment compared to those who underwent standard ureteroscopy.
